Yall wanna hear a kinda funny, kinda sad story about my grandmother and hetero-normativity?

Ok, so... when my grandmother was in her 50s (I was an infant), she met a woman at the Unitarian Church. And, as can happen when you meet your soul mate, this event made it impossible for her to deny parts of herself that she had fiercely hidden her whole life.

All the drama- their affair being found out, the divorce with my grandfather, the court battle over who got the house, happened while I was a baby. Even in my earliest memories, it's just Mama Jo and Oma, and my grandfather lived elsewhere (first his own apartment, then a nursing home, then with us.)

But here's the thing- no one ever explained any of this to me. No one ever sat down and was like "hey, Rosie, so do you know what a lesbian is?" It was the 90s. It was Texas. I think my mom was still kinda processing all this, and just assumed that like... I was gonna figure it out. Don't mention it, let it just be normal. Like I think my mom thought that if she explained the situation, she would be making it weird? I dunno.

But like. In the 90s, in all the movies I had seen and books I had read, do you know how many same sex couples I had seen? Like. 0. Do you know how many "platonic best friend/roommates" I had seen? A lot. I had no context, is what I'm saying.

I literally thought this was a Golden Girls, roommates, besties situation until I was like...I dunno, 11? 12?

It was actually their parrot, an African Grey named Spike, imitating my grandmothers voice saying "Johanna, honey, it's getting late", that triggered the MIND BLOWN moment as I realized that *there's only one master bedroom and it only has 1 waterbed* when all the pieces finally clicked.

Anyway. I think it's a real important thing for kids to know queer people exist, for a lot of reasons, but also because kids can be clueless and it's embarrassing to have your grandmother be outted by a parrot because everyone just thought you'd figure it out on your own.

Anyway, here is my grandma and her wife, my Oma, after they moved to Albuquerque to be artsy gay cowboys and live their best life. They helped run a "Lesbian Dude Ranch" out there (basically just with funding and financial support. As Oma has explained "traditionally, most lesbians don't have a lot of money" so they wrote the checks and let the younger ladies actually run the ranch.)

Actually the show is very bloodless but its still VERY violent they somehow managed to include a LOT of brutality without any gore, be aware of this.

The show is mostly about mundane corrupt gotham but also there are real ghosts and vampires giving it a just the right dose of comic book urban fantasy

Speaking of fantasy the racial and queer diversity for what is vaguely the 1950s america is a big fantasy but im also here for it. racism what? homophobia who? (basically there are a lot of POC, men and women, in positions of power and this is never questioned or brought up or pointed out. Also queer people can just go out for dates and engage in PDA without any issues).

Anyways this show is not mindblowing, it's straightforward (except for the gays). The character designs are top notch, but the storytelling isnt revolutionary. what it IS is decent fresh batman stories. The fantasy 1950s is great because the lack of high tech means the power-levels of the villains and heroes feels very tangible and less unconscionable (sorry superman youre my favorite but its hard to comprehend the scale of destruction and power)

Nothing that is making me sit back and go "wow that was the best thing i experienced in my life" and more "that was really nice, it was exactly what I wanted. classic batman stories set in a fantasy version of a bygone era and new takes on the classic villains that feel well thought out"

“You look cute angel” cumulus smiled, voice sugary sweet compared to cirrus who seemed more uncomfortable, unnatural in the feminine state cumulus had asked her to be in.

A pink toned lipstick covered her lips, mascara and blush also accentuating her features. Cirrus had clearly put it on herself looking at the slightly off placement of the makeup but cumulus thought she looked perfect.

She tugged the fabric lower in a vein attempt to cover herself up more as she looked over to the living room from where they stood in the kitchen. The other ghouls had barely taken notice of her, caught up in some movie she’s sure dew picked out.

“Don’t you like getting all dolled up for me?” Cumulus whispered, watching cirrus roll her eyes and pretend she’s not blushing from the comment. “Getting to be pretty only for me to enjoy?”

Cumulus raised her hand to rest on cirrus’ hip, toying with the skirt. The feeling of the fabric lifting from her thighs made cirrus blush and shimmy to move it back down.

“Can’t you enjoy it somewhere else?”

“Oh no, where’s the fun in that? Don’t you want to watch the movie?” Cumulus giggled, tracing her nail along the exposed skin of her legs.

The movie was some stupid comedy, the ghouls had barely taken attention to it anyways and instead were mostly conversing amongst themselves.

“They’re distracted anyways honey, I could lift your pretty little dress up right now and no one would notice”

Cirrus attempted not to gasp as cumulus made good on her word, lifting the skirt up completely to expose cirrus to her. A dainty pair of black panties adorned her hips, lacy and sheer, clearly picked for cumulus to find.

“Oh those are a bit slutty aren’t they cir?” Cumulus chided, snapping the waistband against her hip “not very lady like to be so exposed”

Morning update: i didn't die, which is great.

I did, in fact, show up at my best friend door with a bouquet of flowers at about 3:00 a.m., thank goddess she was still awake because she just came back from a party.

She was happy to see me, so i guess it went good, even though i didn't confess- anyway she asked me to stay and we slept together, like "together" in the same bed, not like in that other funnier meaning. When i woke up she was using me as a pillow, and then said something like "i'm sorry i didn't text you or anything in the last two years, i missed you but i didn't know how to tell you".

And then her mother made us breakfast, and she was happy to see me too, even though she gave me a few side eyes. Sure as hell thinking me and her daughter did what i wished we had done.

Then she took a shower, AND in the middle of it she asked to come in and bring the bathrobe she forgot. I was like *donotwatchdonotwatch*. And she knows that i'm a lesbian, it's not like a didn't tell her before (she even asked me about my ex girlfriend).

Anyway, i'm still here at her place while she's still in the shower. Idk how i'm going to deal with this situation, i adore her but straight people are confusing.

I generally only "ship" canon couples because they're the ones that are actually romantic. I usually just don't see potential with non-canon ships because the writers didn't put it there.

But canon relationships do sometimes suck. I just read this book where I already knew the MC would get married at the end, but I didn't know to whom. I was hoping she'd go for Malewife Coworker and not Exboyfriend of Ten Years, but guess who she went for? I just don't understand this fantasy that allo people write where two people who dated years ago are still in love? Like, if I had a friend who still loved their ex of ten years, I'd refer them to a therapist.

On top of that, people on the internet are so quick to label platonic relationships as "queerbaiting". I'm not saying queerbaiting doesn't exist (*cough* Supernatural *cough* Sherlock *cough cough*), but some of y'all are ridiculous. No, guys, it's not queerbaiting, the entire book is about how platonic love can be stronger than romantic love.

And the shipping canonically aro/ace characters makes me really uncomfortable. If I shipped a lesbian character with a man, I'd be bullied to hell. But when I point out that putting an aro character in a relationship is kinda aphobic, I'm the bad one? "Oh some aro people are interested in relationships" Yeah, that argument doesn't work when you apparently headcanon every aro character as wanting a relationship. Hazbin Hotel is the worst example. The creator basically just refuses to confirm Alastor as aro so she doesn't alienate the fans that like to ship him. And what about aro people? Are we not important enough to worry about alienating? It's like Genshin refusing to say Sumeru is based off Southeast Asia even though we already know it is so we can't get more mad at them for their colorism.

Meanwhile Mei and Redson at the corner of the libary, nearby the bookshelves, Mei is putting down the binoculars she stolen and is pumping her fist in victory. A quiet irritated groan can be heard behind her.

The two have planned a bet on which the two will make a move first.

"Yes! I won at first round!" She whispers loudly, as she turns to Redson cracking a smug look on her face. Since Hui Ying made the first move, Mei gets to have 10 points for the first round.

"That'll be 10 yuan, (Idk about chinses currency pls don't you come after my sleep) Redboy." She said proudly, her hand raising as if she's waiting for her reward, she saw him twitched his hands and roughly threw the money to her hand.

Mei chuckles and puts it straight to her pocket. She then looks up to him still having that stupid-grin on her face that Redson wished to wipe it off.

"You may have won at the first stage dragon girl.." He glared at her ferociously where this is becoming a bit dramatic for the room.

Mei being unfazed by this, however she humors him by tilting her head like a owl, listening to whatever the fire prince is going to tell her.

"But I will not let this slide- Mark my words for this." His annoyed face turn into a smug as he crossed his hands, closing his eyes in satisfactory.

Mei just rolls her eyes, one of her hands planting to her hips. "Pfft! Sure you wish!-"

"Hey guys! Whatcha two doing???" A voice came out of blue freezing Mei and Redson from their banter.

All the sudden Mk just appears out of nowhere. He peaked out of the chair smiling confused, the two yelped and Mei almost hitted her best friend with a magazine.

Redson shushes him, placing his hands to his mouth as the prince glares at him for his stupidity at randomly appearing, out of the libary out of all places.

"Be quiet Noodleboy! Don't you see where in the middle of a important discussion!??" Redson whisper-yelled at him, his hair brighten red and orange feeling very very agitated.

Mk slouched because Redson was cowering him with his tall posture, immediately the boy gingerly removes the prince hands from his mouth and pouted at him.

"Alright geez.. Okay I get it, just overheard you two doing a bet on those two." He scoffed, however he clamnly raised his hands surrendering at the two prescene.

Mk wanted to leave but Mei prevented him, grabbing the back of his collar and raising him up like a cat, he yelped "Hey! I won't tell anyone I swear!" He panicked.

She glares at him "You better not tell anyone about this Mk!" Redson rolled his eyes next to her and said "Of course he won't tell! What do you expect form a noodlebrain friend of yours?"

"Hey! He may be a idiot but he doesn't have a noodle brain." She rebutted back at the demon prince, but he wasn't affected by it.
